Pilchard Pie

A cheap and cheerful supper that is easy to prepare.
Ingredients
  • Mash
  • 3 – 4 Large Potatoes
  • 2 tbs Butter
  • 1 tsp Baking Powder
  • 4 tbs Milk
  • Salt/Pepper to taste
  • Pie Filling
  • 425g Can of Pilchards in Tomato or Chilli Sauce
  • 100g Frozen or Drained Canned Mixed Vegetables
  • 1/2 Cup Breadcrumbs
Instructions
  1. Pre heat the oven to 200° C
Mash
  1. Cook the potatoes in salted boiling water till soft
  2. Drain well
  3. Mash together with the butter and milk
  4. Fold in the baking powder
  5. Season with a pinch of salt
Pie Filling
  1. Tip the pilchards into a bowl with the sauce
  2. Split them apart length wise, then break into large chunks in the sauce
  3. Gently mix in the mixed veg
  4. Season with salt and pepper
  5. Place Pilchard and vegetable mix in a greased casserole dish
  6. Top with the mashed potatoes
  7. Scatter the breadcrumbs on top
Bake
  1. Bake uncovered for 20 to 30 min until crunchy and golden
  2. For the last 5 min place under the grill to crisp the top of the mash
